At its most pretentious, Kindred is a combat zone of its own erraticisms with no respect for or stress over approaching a tipping point. Including an introduction that could exist together nearby Mufasa giving a lesson on the circle of life, the immense collection opener, "Lifted Up (1985)," like Gossamer's "Go out for a stroll" before it, speaks to a sensational dropping of the shade to divulge Angelakos, holding a lit match, remaining behind a dozen confetti guns with their breakers curved together. Still, all out tracks like "Lifted Up (1985)" and "Until We Can't (Let's Go)"—the last of which incorporates a Sleigh Bells–like charm pop breakdown—are tempered by the downplayed heartfelt quality in Angelakos' voice, and despairing topics in his verses (he's long been openly open about his bipolar issue, to which he frequently implies).
